EVIDENCE BASED WORMING WISHES ALL OF ITS CLIENTS A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WE HOPE THAT 2018 SEES ALL OF YOUR HORSE DREAMS COME TRUE.

Our New Year’s present to you is a reduction in the price of our faecal egg counting service.

We have some new technology that has streamlined our processes and saved us time and money. We want to pass this saving on to our Australian clients as a ‘thank you’ for your past business and we hope this fee reduction helps to offset the ever-increasing cost of sending your horses’ poo samples to us.

From 1 January 2018 the cost of a faecal egg counts (FECs) and faecal egg count reduction testing (FECRT) will be just $15 per test.

For three or more horses, don’t forget to use our generous 10{2ec7fee3a5d31d0314cd8b638f37363370dd18196fc303fb40c0a7e3e82f99ca} discount coupon when you place your order through our website.

But there’s more to come in 2018:

Evidence Based Worming is about to launch a new service for groups of 10 or more horses – Herd Benchmarking – more information coming!

My little dog, Bodo, went to the vet last week for her annual teeth clean and pedicure. During post-operative chit-chat, veterinarian Dr Chris asked me if I could write a short piece for my blog about the dangers of some types of horse wormers when ingested by dogs. Dr Chris explained that the previous week a large pup had been taken to his practice after being found ingesting a mectin-based horse wormer that was on the back seat of a car in which the pup was travelling. Within hours, the pup was presenting unwell clinically and, sadly, died six days later. Nothing could be done to save it.

So please exercise care with chemical anthelmintics – keep them well out of reach of dogs and, of course, small inquisitive children. As we horse owners know, some of these de-wormers are flavoured to make them palatable to horses, which can also make them attractive to other animals.

Spread the word – don’t leave horse wormers where they can be accessed by your kids or pets. Let this pup’s death leave a legacy of greater awareness within the horse community about the lethal effect of mectin-based wormers on some non-target species such as dogs.

The post Warning first appeared on Evidence Based Worming.

Last Saturday, 27 May 2017, Horse SA hosted our one-day Resisting Worm Resistance workshop at the Business Centre in Woodside. Evidence Based Worming cannot thank Julie Fiedler enough for all her work in organising this workshop – I don’t know how you put all these things together, Julie, you don’t even look stressed! The workshop went flawlessly – fantastic facilities, coffee, tea, (chocolate) biscuits on tap and a Bakery over the road. The 8 attendees were fabulous and I am allowing myself to think that perhaps a little bit of my passion for equine gastro-intestinal parasites might have rubbed off on them.

Not one, but two workshops – there was more interest than places in the last workshop so Julie is organising a further EBW Resisting Worm Resistance workshop on Saturday 22 July 2017. Please contact Julie at Horse SA if you would like to come along. LOTS of practical experience in undertaking faecal egg counts guaranteed!

The post Thank you Horse SA! first appeared on Evidence Based Worming.

It is with extreme sadness that the first entry into my new website/Facebook integrated Blog is about the passing of my dear friend and veterinarian, Richard Chapman. I was fortunate to meet Richard way back in about 1979 when I knew diddly-squat about how to manage my horse’s parasites and consequently my first horse got quite sick with strongyles. I had just moved to a new city and knew no-one, let alone any vets. It was pure luck he was visiting the agistment centre, saw my horse standing depressed under a tree and exclaimed ‘my goodness, that’s a wormy horse!’ That comment and his later attention to all my horse’s veterinary needs set me on a path of continuous education into all things equine, particularly equine gastro-intestinal parasitology. I can honestly say that, years later in 2015, Richard was the inspiration for my business, Evidence Based Worming.

Whenever Richard arrived to treat horses you were immediately put at ease, he was a no-fuss, lateral thinking, old fashioned sort of vet who always could come up with a practical approach to treatment. He was cheeky, funny, compassionate and a good friend. I was one of the many people who nagged him into writing his book (which I am proud to be selling through my website) ‘Should I call the vet? and what should I do until he gets here’. I think I was also one of many people who offered to type it up for him!

Richard leaves the ACT horse community in mourning at the moment, he was well known, well respected and well loved. Rest easy Richard, may your heaven be stacked with grateful horses and companion animals that you have treated over the many years you were with us.

Sincere condolences to his family – please be comforted that many of us are thinking of you at this time.

The post Vale Richard Chapman, BVSc. first appeared on Evidence Based Worming.
